Job Description

A Certified Veterinary Technician that will oversee the Surgery Team and provide organization and efficiency of surgical procedures and appointments.  The Surgery Team Coordinator must have knowledge in all the areas of nursing care in order to direct, plan, and perform a variety of duties concerned with animal health and client education to assure the highest quality of patient care.

The Technician Manager or Clinical Supervisor of Surgery

  • Will provide adequate and compensated time to fulfill the responsibilities of the job
  • Must be reliable, highly organized, and adaptable to changes within all the departments of the hospital
  • Will lead by example and serve as a representative of the hospital, displaying consideration, courtesy, compassion, and professionalism in all interactions with patients, clients, and all hospital staff
  • Will maintain a high standard of patient care
  • Must be able to communicate well with clients by showing care and concern for them as well as their pet(s)
  • Will serve as a liaison between the Surgery team and all other shifts and departments in the hospital
  • Must understand and support the Hospital’s mission and overall direction

MAJOR DUTIES

Personnel

  • Provide strong leadership and supervision to the surgery technicians and assistants and to the entire hospital
  • Assist, provide support as needed, and communicate on a daily basis with the Technician Supervisor
  • Participate and provide input on hiring staff for the surgery department
  • Responsible for training and mentoring of Sx technicians and assistants
  • Work with Technician Supervisor regarding surgery team schedules to ensure adequate staffing for the department and the entire hospital (includes monitoring of overtime, coverage of the surgery team’s scheduled vacation time and on-call schedule)
  • Provide input for performance evaluations for the surgery team (3 month and annual)
  • Help implement hospital wide changes, policies, and procedures
  • Enforce hospital policies as stated in employee manual with assistance and support from the Hospital Director and/or Human Resources as needed.
  • Participate in verbal and/or written disciplinary actions of the surgery team members as necessary depending on the nature of violation

Communication

  • Assist in scheduling and planning monthly surgery team meetings, help develop agenda and CE for team meetings
  • Attend meetings as necessary (including, but not limited to staff meetings, department meetings, and team coordinator meetings) and provide input where needed
  • Maintain communication between surgery doctors and the surgery technicians and assistants

Technical   

  • Must be able to perform all duties of Veterinary Technician including duties specific to the surgery technician as needed

Operations

  • Equipment and room care maintenance
  • Ensure adequate supplies and inventory specific to the surgery department
  • Organize and schedule daily procedures
  • Daily communication with Technician Supervisor regarding the surgery schedule
  • Direct and assist surgery technicians and assistants, who directly or  indirectly provide patient care, in their performance of a variety of technical duties
  • Understand and put into practice all WRAH protocols and procedures
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for the surgery department.
  • Oversee completion of daily surgery department duties
  • Assist and support other departments in the hospital as the schedule allows
  • Perform other duties as assigned
