Here, you will work alongside the best, chart your own career course, and contribute to company growth in a fun, fast paced team environment. ** **VPI is looking for a Veterinarian to join our Denver Claims Department.** JOB SUMMARY: Utilize professional veterinary medical and surgical training, combined with clinical experience to determine eligibility of pended or disputed claims. Interpret presence of, and clinical relevance of pre-existing medical conditions in accordance veterinary medical and surgical practice standards, pet insurance policy contract language and the company’s uniformly applied underwriting criteria. Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: Use professional training, knowledge and clinical experience in Veterinary Medicine to provide opinions on complicated medical claims. Must be able to: 1. Utilize veterinary knowledge and clinical experience to review pets’ medical records to identify the proper utilization of the pre-existing medical conditions and claims eligibility, as noted on the policy. 2. Use medical records and professional veterinary medical resources (scientific literature) to interpret disease condition inception dates, incubation periods and other clinically relevant timeline information. 3. Understand the progression of disease states to determine the possibility of pre-existing conditions. 4. Recognize and interpret medical records and use medical knowledge and professional veterinary resources (scientific literature) to identify congenital and hereditary conditions and their progression. 5. Must be able to interpret oral and written correspondence from attending veterinarians and/or veterinary specialists. 6. Assist department staff members with understanding of complex medical conditions. 7. Performs other duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor of Science Degree. Graduate degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Experience: 7-10 years of small animal veterinary practice experience. Special Requirements/Certification: Maintain Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) practice license in minimum of one state, and fulfill ongoing professional continuing education requirements in that state. Knowledge: Veterinarian Medicine; animal science. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, internet navigation and must be able to type a minimum of 30 words per minute. Skills/Competencies: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common veterinary scientific and technical journals, financial reports and insurance policy contract language. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from fellow VPI employees, policyholders, regulatory agencies or members of the veterinary community. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform simple calculations including discounts, interest, proportions and percentages. Ability to interpret medical records, with a comprehensive understanding of veterinary medical diseases and procedures. Ability to apply clinical judgment and extrapolate information based on previous clinical experience. Ability to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited information exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
